Where are the best motorcycle roads in the world?
This is one of those questions you will likely get as many answers as the number of people you ask! Everyone has a different opinion and there is no one right answer. It is just like asking what is the best oil to use or what is the best motorcycle tire.
Last night, as I was going to bed, I opened the current issue of Road Runner magazine. For anyone interested in seeing great places to ride around the US and the world, this is a great magazine. It provides GPS files as well as printed route maps with each issue. Anyway, as I read the editor's opening article; it discussed the Road Runner team's thoughts about the best roads.
Listed first are the Alps and Dolomite's of Europe. Stelvio Pass is specifically called out - how timely as I am going there very soon (and have done the Dolomite's of Italy once before) - check. Next they discuss the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) and the many mountains and valleys in California - check, been there too. Also mentioned is the 90 mile stretch of Hwy 191 in Arizona (the Coronado trail) which goes between Alpine and Morenci and, you guessed it - been there too! Other states mentioned include Montana, Colorado, Idaho, Arkansas, Ohio and New York. I would agree, each of these states have great riding as well. In the eastern U.S., there is the Appalachian Mountain chain stretching from New York to Alabama. Some of the famous roads in this area include the Blue Ridge Parkway, Tail of the Dragon, Back of the Dragon, the Snake and many more. Check, check, check, and check. The staff from Road Runner selected the Southern Appalachians as the best riding due to the thousands of miles of curvy roads in the area. While I agree there are many great roads in this area, I think the staff may be a bit biased as this is their back yard.
As I stated at the beginning, there is no one right answer to this question. Many motorcyclists would say either "the road I'm currently on" or "the last road I was one" meaning anytime spent riding is a good time. I am very fortunate to have ridden all these roads and areas. I expect this trip will provide another perspective on the many great roads in world and maybe I will find a new favorite road to share with others!
